Piedmont was known as the “City of the Millionaires” during the 1920s when it was home to the United States’ greatest concentration of highly affluent residents. Housing options here include many of the original grand residences built during the early 20th century. Piedmont is a private and exclusive community within easy reach of everything in Oakland and San Francisco.
Piedmont’s name comes from the Italian word for “foothill”. The community’s hillside setting provides captivating views over other East Bay communities and the San Francisco Bay. Piedmont is bisected by Highland Avenue—neighborhoods west of Highland Avenue are considered part of Upper Piedmont, which generally have larger lots and more spectacular views than homes east of Highland Avenue in Lower Piedmont. Oakland’s bustling Piedmont Avenue commercial district borders Piedmont to the northwest.

Its deli counter serves delicious sandwiches with gourmet fillings, including avocado, marinara meatballs, pico de gallo, and slow-roasted pork loin. Other deli items include artisanal salads, mac and cheese, and fried chicken. A classic soda fountain offers traditional treats served with scoops of Fenton’s ice cream. Mulberry’s also has a coffee stand with brews from Bay Area favorite Peet’s Coffee.
Piedmont’s recreation areas and green spaces include six city parks with numerous playgrounds and sports facilities. Piedmont Park covers 15 acres of lush landscape with a creek, trees, and grassy areas. Close to Piedmont Park, Piedmont Aquatics Center has three pools with lap lanes, diving boards, and lifeguards. Dracena Park has a playground with a climbing wall and sand play areas within the 8-acre site of an abandoned quarry. Hampton Park completed a massive renovation project in 2018. The newly-renovated park has a sports field with a baseball diamond, bleachers, basketball hoops, and tennis and volleyball courts. Another baseball diamond can be found on the large grassy area of Coaches Field. Crocker Park is a smaller neighborhood park with a bear statue, trees, and flower beds. The Linda Beach Park and Playfield has a tot lot, a dog run, tennis and pickleball courts, and a field for soccer and baseball. Dogs are also allowed off-leash at Blair Park at the head of Moraga Canyon. Blair Park was originally developed as an amusement park in the 19th century but has since been transformed into one of the city’s largest protected natural areas. Kennelly Skate Park features concrete bowls and ramps.
